Handwriting is one of my greatest passions. I have been practicing my handwriting for years, my friends ask me to do signs for their weddings, parties, and other events. But I definitely had to start somewhere. Learning how to do calligraphy can be daunting, but I am here to show you one way to get started.
For this tutorial, we will be using the Monoline brush, but first, let's set up the canvas.
1:
Today I opened up a square canvas. Here you can see where you can change the background color, but for the sake of the tutorial, I stayed with white. You can tap on the color block next to "background-color" and it will allow you to adjust what the base layer looks like.
2:
Whenever I am doing anything in Procreate, I like to turn on my drawing guide to make sure I am doing everything straight. Select the wrench icon in the top left of the screen, tap on "canvas" and toggle the drawing guide switch to on. It will turn blue once it is on. Then you can select "edit drawing guide" to adjust the size of the grid, what kind of drawing guide you are wanting, and the color of the lines. This is a really good article on using the drawing guide feature.
3:
From there, select your brush icon and select "calligraphy." Here you will see a lot of brushes that are great for handwritten fonts. Today we are using Monoline, so select that and tap it again to open the brush settings.
4:
Select "Stroke Path" if it isn't already selected and make sure that StreamLine is turned all the way to max. This will ensure that you have smooth, clean lines. Here is a video tutorial on how to do that.
5:
From here I am going to write happy in cursive. You will want to know how to write cursive for this, and there are lots of tutorials surrounding that, I like this one. This site has a bunch of worksheets you can follow to practice cursive.
6:
After I have that down, I really like to add some additional lines to the downstrokes to add a cute, vintage feel to the letters. For a more, in-depth idea of how to make downstrokes, check out this post.
Here is a non-cursive example, but the downstrokes are the same.
Then you can throw it all together and get something like this!
This little Halloween doodle was done using only the Monoline brush. If you are just starting out, this brush is super great!
